BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT SYSTEM:

Students are held accountable for their actions (commensurate with their age and other factors).  For those students who have difficulty in choosing acceptable modes of behavior, the following measures have been identified as appropriate.
A student may be subjected to disciplinary action when the student does not follow teacher or school rules and regulations. Students are subject to the rules and regulations cited in the discipline code while appearing at or attending any school-sponsored activity when that activity is not taking place during normal school hours or on school premises (e.g., athletic contests, field trips, co-curricular activities, student events, etc.).
Student’s need to understand that consequences flow from their actions and sometimes these consequences are negative. The purpose of the below mentioned discipline plan is:
  • To enable students’ to be responsible for their behavior.
  • Respect other’s rights
  • Feel safe in class and school.
 
  1. Arriving late to school:
Arriving late to school can be defined as arriving after the first bell goes off at school, at 7.50 a.m. 
  • First warning –
    1. A note will be sent to the parents
    2. A verbal reprimand by the PE teachers.
  • Second warning –
    1. A note will be sent to the parents
    2. A verbal reprimand by the PE teachers.
    3. The student will be excluded from the first class of the day.
  • Third warning –
    1. The student will be marked absent for the day and sent back home by their own transport.
Should the behaviour persist after three warnings, the matter will be referred to the Behaviour Management Committee, who will decide the next course of action.
Students are expected to arrive at their designated pick-up points punctually in the morning. The School bus is not required to await the arrival of the student and if the student is not at the designated pick-up point, the School bus may leave without the student.
 
  1. Hitting / beating / hurting another child/poking, being physically abusive to another child:
Physical abuse, in this case, may be defined as any intentional act causing injury or trauma to another person by way of bodily contact. Any form of physical abuse is strictly prohibited in the school premises and school transport.
  • First warning –
    1. verbal reprimand
    2. suspension from one class immediately following incident by the Class Teacher.
    3. The Behaviour Management Committee will be informed.
  • Second warning –
    1. The child will be reported to the supervisor and reprimanded a warning letter will be sent to the parents.
    2. The Behaviour Management Committee will be informed.
  • Final Warning –
    1. the child will be taken to the counsellor for counselling
    2. a warning letter will be sent to the parents.
    3. The Behaviour Management Committee will be informed.
More than 3 warnings of physically abusive behaviour may result in 1-day suspension from school by the Principal.
 
  1. Cheating:
Using of unfair or dishonest means to gain an unfair advantage in a competitive situation.
  • First Warning –
    1. Deduction of 15 marks from the relevant examination paper by the invigilator.  The invigilator will keep the Exam Cell and the supervisor informed.
    2. A warning letter will be sent to parents informing them about the same
    3. The student will be counselled by the school counsellor.
    4. The Behaviour Management Committee will be informed.
  • Second Warning –
    1. A “0” mark on the relevant examination paper by the invigilator. The invigilator will keep the Exam Cell and the supervisor informed.
    2. A warning letter will be sent to parents and they may be called to the school
    3. Counselling session with the school counsellor.
    4. The Behaviour Management Committee will be informed.
  • Final warning –
    1. The student may be given a “0” mark for all the papers of the examination
    2. 3 days’ suspension from the school by the Principal.
    3. The Behaviour Management Committee will be informed.
Should the behaviour persist after three warnings, the matter will be referred to the Behaviour Management Committee, who will decide the next course of action.
 
  1. Students are not permitted to carry the following items to school:
    1. Mobile phones / MP3 players / I pods / I pads
    2. Chewing gum
    3. Glass bottles
    4. Jewellery
    5. Unnecessary money
    6. Fireworks
    7. Cigarettes or lighters or lighting fluids or matchboxes or e-cigarettes
    8. Deodorants / Perfumes / Colognes
    9. Makeup / Nail polish
    10. Over the counter medication without a prescription.
    11. Knives/pocket knives / sharp objects like screwdrivers / icepicks etc.
    12. Mental scissors in the Kindergarten, Pre-primary and Primary sections.
    13. Scarf Pins
    14. Super Glue
    15. Tin Refreshments
    16. Any items which are illegal to possess or carry, or inappropriate for the age of the child or the school environment.
Any of these items found in the possession of the student will be immediately confiscated by the Student Council members or any member of the teaching/admin staff who finds them in the possession of the student. The Behaviour Management Committee will be informed. The Class Teacher will issue a warning letter to the parents.
Once confiscated from the student, the restricted items will only be returned to parents.
 
  1. Truancy:
Truancy is any intentional, unjustified, unauthorized, or illegal absence from school. It is absence caused by students of their own free will and does not refer to legitimate excused absences, such as ones related to medical conditions. The parents of the student are usually under the impression that the student is at school during the school hours, while the student has not reported to school.
  • First warning –
    1. Parents will be informed
    2. the student will be suspended from the school for a period of 7 days.
    3. The Behaviour Management Committee will be informed.
  • Second warning –
    1. Parents will be informed
    2. The student will be suspended from the school for a period of 21 days.
    3. The Behaviour Management Committee will be informed.
  • Final warning –
    1. the student may result in the expulsion of the student. This is at the discretion of the Principal.
All students will be dropped at their designated stops by the school transport. No requests for change in drop-off location will be entertained from the students. Parents must write a mail to the school informing us of any change in the drop-off location. A change in the drop-off location will be considered in cases where there is a change of address or parents have a valid reason for demanding the same.
 
  1. Smoking:
Smoking at any location within the school premises, indoors or in the grounds and surrounding perimeter of the school or within the school transport is strictly prohibited.
  • First Warning –
    1. The student will be referred to the Class Teacher, who will explain the ill effects of smoking,
    2. A warning letter will be sent to the parents.
    3. The Behaviour Management Committee will be informed.
  • Second Warning –
    1. the student will be referred to the school counsellor,
    2. community work within the school will be the imposed punishment.
    3. The Behaviour Management Committee will be informed.
  • Final warning –
    1. The student may be suspended from the school for a period of 15 days at the discretion of the Principal.
Should the behaviour persist after three warnings, the matter will be referred to the Behaviour Management Committee, who will decide the next course of action.
 
  1. Use of profanity:
The use of obscene language, swear words and expletive curse words is strictly prohibited within the school premises and school transport.  
  • First warning –
    1. A verbal reprimand will be issued by the Class teacher.
  • Second Warning –
    1. Community work within the school will be imposed
    2. A warning letter to the parents and
    3. A counselling session with the school counsellor.
    4. The Behaviour Management Committee will be informed.
  • Final warning –
    1. The student will be asked to do extended community work,
    2. Continued sessions with the school counsellor.
    3. The parents of the students will be involved in the process.
However, it should be noted that if profanity is being used against a teacher or staff of the school, the student will be severely punished. In such a case,
  • First warning –
    1. The student will be asked to apologize to the teacher/staff.
    2. A reprimand will be issued
    3. Warning letter sent to the parents.
    4. The Behaviour Management Committee will be informed.
  • Second warning –
    1. If profanity is used against the same teacher/staff member a second time, the student may be suspended from school at the discretion of the Principal.
 
  1. Bullying:
Bullying is the use of force, threat, or coercion to abuse, intimidate or aggressively dominate others. The behavior is often repeated and habitual. One essential prerequisite is the perception, by the bully or by others, of an imbalance of social or physical power, which distinguishes bullying from conflict.
Bullying within the School Premises or School Transport is strictly prohibited.
  • First Warning –
    1. a verbal reprimand issued to the bully
    2. the matter is referred to the school counsellor
    3. A warning letter will be sent to the parents
    4. The Behaviour Management Committee will be informed
  • Second warning –
    1. Detention within the school,
    2. A warning letter will be sent to parents
    3. Continued counselling with the school counsellor.
    4. The Behaviour Management Committee will be informed.
  • Final warnings –
    1. depending on the seriousness of the bullying act, the student may be suspended from the school at the discretion of the School Principal for a period of 7 days.
The Behaviour Management Committee / Disciplinary Committee:
This committee is formed to review and discuss student behavioral issues and is also concerned with revising the disciplinary procedures and actions applied in accordance with the school behavior management regulations.
The School Behaviour Management Committee is headed by the Principal. She is assisted by the following:
  1. Supervisors
  2. School Counsellor
  3. OSH Officer
  4. PE Teachers
  5. Concerned Class Teacher
With regard to any disciplinary actions within the school premises or school transport, the decision of the Behaviour Management Committee will be final.
